Shigellosis occurs worldwide but hosts limited to humans, 60% of cases are children 1-10yrs

infectious period - during acute phase, bacteria in faeces for up to 4 weeks

incubation period usually 1-3 days, can be 12h- 7 days

antibiotics can shorten duration/ severity, should be based on antibiogram of serotype

stool cultures may be confined to food handlers and those in situations where the spread of infection is particularly likely (child care centres, hospitals, institutions)
