Nephew Fred

Antithesis to Scrooge

''A merry Christmas, uncle!' cried a cheerful voice'

'he had so heated himself...that he was all in glow'

Physically and metaphorically warm, which others feel, in contrast to the cold description of Scrooge ⭐

'Cheerful' in contrast to 'solitary', 'tight-fisted', etc. Refuses to let Scrooge's misery bring him down

'a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time'

Positive opinion of Christmas, adjectives reflect himself. Acts as a mouthpiece of Dickens' views about charity, etc. ⭐

'What right have you to be dismal?'

Recognises how lucky he is, and takes advantage of his situation - shows that money doesn't by happiness, better to be rich in relationships than financially.

Symbol of Good

Happy/Optimistic

'revelled in another laugh' - enjoys being happy and making other people happy, spreads joy ⭐

'Let him in! It is a mercy he didn't shake his arm off'

Persistent

'I mean to give him the same chance every year, whether he likes it or not, because I pity him'

Invites Scrooge year after year, and lets him in despite continual abuse, because he pities him, and wishes for him to be happy

Role

Human representation of the Christmas spirit, acts as a role model for the reader

Shows what Scrooge could have been like, and the family that he had, represented in Fan and then Fred

Serves to compare to Bob Cratchit - they have the same views, and are both happy even though they are less rich
