- - - - history is all we got is historical. What do we do with this past experience. and yes there are rules for understanding history and better and worse ways.
      - it teaches us about freedom. in difficult times it is important to ask to be free. it is about structures about how things fit together and cannot fit together and gives you a better understanding. History by teaching about patterns tells you how you can get behind the patterns.
      - It is about ethics and provides a sense of a moment which has a cohesiveness. In so far as we can see moment we can see our esponsibility. It gives us a sense that all of our actions have consequences
      - it gives us company and people have faced situations that are similar and greater than those that we face and left behind records and thoughts.
- - - - they can scrupulously mislead unless their historical context is known. A young economic historian once worked out in aitalian city in the 15th century how many people died a violent death and the 15ht century figures were much higher and concluded that the city must have been much more violent -> back then that was the end nowadays it could be cured,
      - hospitals in the middle ages and in the early modern ages accepted people who were not ill but who had nowhere to sleep etc. Later when they became better organised they only admitted people who were really ill.
