Radiation Reveals The Secrets Of The Universe
Infared
Invisible to the human eye
Can be used for night vision,
remote controls, thermal imaging, crime investigations,
and for seeing objects in space.
Can be detected by heat
Size of a hair
Not as dangerous as other radiations
X-Ray
2nd most dangerous :warning:
Wavelength is the size of an atom
#
Can pass through soft tissue (organs, skin)
Cannot travel through hard tissue (bones & teeth) Unless tooth has soft spot (cavity) or crack in bone.
One of the most common and beneficial uses of X-rays is for medical imaging.
X-rays are also used in treating cancer and in exploring the cosmos.
Gamma Radiation
Most Dangerous :warning:
Small enough to destroy your DNA
Wavelength is the size of an atom
You will not turn into the Hulk
found in neutron stars and pulsars, supernova explosions, and regions around black holes.
Microwaves
long waves and low frequencies
Used for communication: WiFi, Bluetooth, cellphones, navigation(GPS), Radar, astronomy, and heating
Size of a baseball
Not as dangerous as other radiations
#
Although it can give you cataracts (foggy lenses, no blood vessels draw away heat.)
Ultraviolet (UV)
Mostly comes from the sun
Size of a molecule
3rd most dangerous
overexposure can lead to skin cancer :warning:
Can be used for Vitamin D production, crime investigation, and it kills bacteria.
Certain animals can see ultraviolet (fish, and bees)
Radio Waves
longest of the waves
Used for communication,
broadcasting, radar, and satellites
#
naturally occurring radio waves
are formed from lightning and objects in space
Size of a football field
Doppler Effect
Sound
High pitch
Moves towards you
Low pitch
Moves Away from you
Light
When light moves towards the observer the waves shift the color from the red side to the blue side, or the blue shift.
When light moves away, the light shifts from blue to red (red shift)
