Biology
photosynthesis
a series of enzyme-catalysed reactions carried out by the green parts of plants to produce glucose. It requires carbon dioxide, water and requires energy transferred by light
-
producer
an organism that makes its own food, such as plant using photosynthesis.
biomass
the total mass in living organisms, usually shown as the mass after drying.
chloroplast
a green disc containing chlorophyll found in plant cell. This is where the plant makes glucose through photosynthesis.
endothermic reaction
a type of reaction in which energy from the surroundings is transferred to the products eg photosynthesis.
-
-
-
storage organ
a plant organ used to store energy-rich substances, such as starch, eg a potato.
palisade cells
tall, column-shaped cell near the upper surface of a plant leaf.
stomata
tiny pores in a leaf, which open, allow gases to diffuse into and out of the leaf.
-
gas exchange
a process in which one gas diffuses across a membrane and another gas diffuses in the other direction.
limiting factor
a single factor that when in short supply can limit the rate of the process, such as photosynthesis.
directly proportional
a linear relationship in which the percentage change in a variable occurs with an equal percentage change in another variable. It is seen as a straight line through the origin when the two variable are plotted on a graph.
inversely proportional
a relationship between two variables in which if one variable doubles, the other halves.
inverse square law
a mathematical relationship in which a quantity varies in inverse proportion to the square of the distance from the source of the quantity.
