models & weight loss = weight-focused comparisons to thinner targets led to increased thoughts of dieting & exercise (and actual behavior); BUT exposure to heavier targets also increased weight loss cognitions (similarity?); effects even stronger with friends (closeness)
crucial role of similarity = restrained eaters who felt similar to presented model felt better when it was slim & but when they don't feel similar to the thin model, the opposite is true, they feel worse

The self
-
Who am I? = self-concept
-
-
social identity = our identity is also formed by belonging to certain group (s) -> Karlijn belongs to group mother, women & researcher
social identity theory = categorization, identification, compariso, relevance, distinctiveness
categorization = minimal group paradigm = even minimal & meaningless distinctions between group (red & blue coins) can trigger tendency to favor one's own group at the expense of others (children 5-years = playmate preference and behavior recall)
Self-knowledge
-
dissociations between explicit & implicit processes; unconscious processes are often not accessible to consciousness
therefore, no objective knowlede/feedback about the self available --> what is the solution? compare ourselves to others! = social comparison
