Legal and Evangelical Repentance
Similarities
Law is presented
Deep sense of guilt and fear of God
Differences
Legal
Sinner sees only the Law and not the saviour
Fulfilling the law is the way to satisfy God
God is only a stern judge and avenger
Driven to despair
Problems
Fear as primary motivation in human relationships
Cannot achieve love and respect for the other persons or their human dignity
God never loves or values humanity as they are.
And the Irony is that we can never actually satisfy the law
Repentance --> Forgiveness
This can inhibit political reconciliation
The other party may never be able to repay "enough" to warrant our forgiveness
How do the dead ever show repentance?
The first move is seen
on the side of the offender
People do not want to be seen as the offender
No one's hands are clean in human conflicts
Evangelical
Sinner sees the mercy and forgiveness of the saviour
Faith in the saviour is the way to satisfy God
Natural outworking of forgiveness is mortification of sinful nature and quickening of Spirit
God is merciful and gracious
Order of forgiveness and repentance
Forgiveness --> Repentance
God is Willing to forgive sinners (CROSS) and anyone can come to him for forgiveness
Repentance --> Forgiveness
God grants forgiveness (or pardon) to anyone who comes to him in faith and repentance
Luke 17:3-4 -- If your brother repents, forgive. No matter how many times
It shows that our love for our brother is not shallow, but deep. We desire their reformation.
Calvin on 17:3-4
Willing to forgive a person, returning evil with kindness, loves him, even while having an unfavourable opinion of the person.
Granting forgiveness upon repentance. Receiving the offending brother back into our favour, thinking and respecting favourably of him.
Marrow controversy
Does it make faith, holiness and repentance CONDITIONS in God's covenant of grace?
It makes God's covenant into a contract
NOT conditions, but outworkings of covenant of grace. They are the evidence or proof of genuine repentance and reconciliation
Given by the Holy Spirit
Not sufficient condition, but still a necessary condition for forgiveness
Fulfills Ezekiel's prophecy of covenant people becoming law keeping people
Political reconciliation
Recognize that all have a part to play in complex geo-political conflicts
Both parties must show some measure of penitence and seek forgiveness
It must begin with both parties been willing to forgive
Expressing the desire to no longer exact revenge, and payback. Express one's wish to be reconciled.
But he or she is also clear as to what were the wrongs that were clearly perpetrated against them
