The rhythmic effects depend almost entirely on what a statement means, and different intended meanings will produce different rhythms even in identical statements

Pauses
Caused by:
- natural speech rhythms
- structure of sentences
Poetry adds another kind of pause arising from the fact that poetry is written in lines.
- poetic line - a unit that creates pauses in the flow of speech, sometimes slight and sometimes large.
- end stopped line - one in which the end of the line corresponds with a natural pause
- run-on line (enjambment) - one in which the sense of the lines hurries on into the next line.
- caesura - pause placed in the middle of a line

Meter
