Epidermis vs Dermis
Epidermis:
- a layer of stratified squamous epithelium
- lacks blood vessels
- protects underlying tissues against water loss, mechanical injury, and the effects of harmful chemicals.
Dermis:
- a layer composed of irregular dense connective tissue
- binds the epidermis to underlying tissues
- dermal blood vessels supply nutrients to all skin cells and help regulate body temp
-
Keritinization
- cells begin to harden
- strong, tough, waterproof keratin proteins are synthesized and stored within the cell
- many layers of tough, tightly packed dead cells accumulate in the epidermis
- this forms an outermost layer called the stratum corneum
- the dead cells that compose it are eventually shed
Layers of the Epidermis:
Outermost layer to Deepest layer:
1) stratum corneum
2) stratum lucidum
3) stratum granulosum
4) stratum spinosum
5) stratum basale
