SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: CONFLICT
CORRIB GAS FIELD MAYO
SRP 3:
The residents want Shell to process the gas at sea for environmental reasons and Shell want to process the gas on land for economic reasons
SRP 4:
This will reduce our dependence on imports of other fuels and it will have a positive impact on our balance of payments by reducing our demand for imported gas
SRP 2:
Corrib gas conflict is between Shell (an MNC involved in oil and gas production) and the local people in north west Mayo over the processing of natural gas on the land at the plant at Bellenaboy
SRP 5:
People also believe that a refinery in Co. Mayo will cause air and water pollution and that it would pose a serious health and safety risk for locals in the area as well as a destruction of the natural beauty
SRP 1:
The exploitation of natural gas at the Corrib Gas terminal in Co. Mayo is a good example of how a conflict of interest may develop between economic interests and environmental interests
AMAZON RAINFOREST
SRP 8:
However environmental interests are in conflict with economic interests in this area. According to environmentalists, this clearance of the tropical rainforest is unsustainable and is having serious environmental impacts
SRP 7:
Timber from the tropical rainforest in Brazil is an important natural resource with global demand for hardwoods such as mahogany and teak increasing
SRP 6:
The exploitation of timber through the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil is another example of how conflict of interest may develop between economic interests and environmental interests
SRP 10:
Drastically reducing the number of trees by deforestation increases CO2 and therefore contributes massively to an increase in world temperatures and subsequently Global Warming
SRP 9:
The vast majority of rainforests in the world act as a carbon sink as trees take in CO2 and convert it to oxygen. The tropical rainforests are vital for reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
OVERALL SUSTAINABILITY
SRP 14:
Glaciers in Iceland and Greenland are melting rapidly as the sea is constantly rising. Ice melting, experts predict a 1 meter sea rise next century.
SRP 13:
CLIMATE CHANGE is the overall change in temperature, rain, wind speed as a result of Global Warming
SRP 15:
Agencies need to work side by sided to make changes together. Changes that we make today can alter the impacts of Climate Change in the future
SRP 11:
RENEWABLE ENERGY: Wind energy is the most promising renewable energy for Ireland.Mount Lucas wind farm, Co Offaly, is connected to the National Grid and has 28 turbines.we have strong prevailing winds and using wind energy would also reduce our CO2 emissions
SRP 12:
RENEWABLE ENERGY: Solar Energy is power from the sun, an inexhaustible resource. It could cut fuel bills by 60%, and give free hot water for six months. Solar panels can be replaced on existing structures which saves time and money
