Three Trimesters of Development
The first trimester
all tissues, organs, and organ systems begin to develop.
During this time of development, the embryo is especially vulnerable to the effects of alcohol, tobacco, drugs, and other environmental influences
During the first two weeks the mother not yet missed a menstrual period
At the end of eight weeks, the embryo is called a fetus.
All of the organ systems have begun to form.
the fetus can move its arms, fingers, and toes and make facial expressions.
Fingerprints are present.
3rd trimester
fetus continues to grow at a rapid rate
-fat accumulates under the skin to provide insulation
-new nerve cells in the brain are forming at a specific rate
able to respond to sounds
The second trimester
18 to 20 weeks
heartbeat might be heard using a stethoscope
capable of sucking its thumb
can develop the hiccups
Hair usually forms
fetal eyes will open
The baby’s lungs have not developed fully,
immune system is not fully functional.
At the end of this trimester, the fetus might be able to survive outside the mother’s uterus with the aid of medical intervention,
