The Acceptable Muslim
Coined the term 'Acceptable Muslim' to illuminate a figure that is created and seen as 'acceptable' by western multicultural, settler nation-state
My work centralizes that the condition of inclusion is always one that confirms the racial boundaries of the nation-state and in this case, specifically for the Muslims
2 types of Acceptable Muslims: the Secular Muslim and the Multiculturalist Muslim. There has been some scholarly attention paid to the Secular Muslim (Fernando, Bayoumi,Sharify-Funk). Separatealy, there has been some attention to Zarqa Nawaz and LMOP. But my specific contribution is in linking these two sets of figures together. I argue that they are two sides of the same coin (acceptability) and that all these figures shore up (intentionally or unintentionally) the racial boundaries of the nation-state.
I outline common features and nuances of the figures of the Acceptable Muslim and provide an analysis of the ideological functions of such figures
These figures reconfigure and reanimate conversations bout race, gender, religion/secularism, culture and Muslims
The price of conditional inclusion for A.M. is to express loyalty to ideological goals of the (white) settler nation-state. Fidelity reconfirms the boundaries of acceptable citizenship beyond which other bodies can be legitimately policed and excluded
