Fundamental Freedoms
Freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression.
Freedom of peaceful assembly.
Freedom of association.
Freedom of conscience and Religion.
Responsibilities
Obeying the law and to know no one is above the law.
Fostering a respectful attitude towards others.
Real Life Examples
An individual has the right to wear a religious garment in a public setting.
An individual has the right to hang out with and to meet and be with others. For example, within school, students are able to join a variety of school clubs.
A group of university students may peacefully protest a raise in class fees.
Democratic Rights
The right to vote for a new government at least every five years.
The right to vote for members of the House of Commons and of provincial legislatures.
Real Life Examples
A individual Canadian Citizen, 18 years or over, may vote in Canada's federal Election.
An individual may attend a city council meeting in order to voice a concern and take part in the action.
Responsibilities
To vote and to respect the results of the election.
Taking an interest in who is running in your area by attending meetings about our MP.
Mobility Rights
The right to enter, stay in, or leave Canada.
The right to move anywhere within Canada and to earn a living there.
Responsibilities
A Canadian citizen will apply for a Canadian passport. Your passport must be valid during travel.
Legally enter and leave the country.
Real Life Examples
An individual can travel outside of the province for a job opportunity in order to earn a living.
An individual can leave Canada to go to another country for recreational purposes and return back to Canada.
Legal Rights
The right to be free of imprisonment, search and seizure without reasons backed by law and evidence.
The right to a fair and quick public trial by an impartial court that assumes that you are innocent until proven guilty.
Responsibilities
Pay taxes and file honestly.
In a court of law you must tell the truth and nothing but the truth.
Real Life Examples
An individual will be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public trial by an independent and impartial judge.
An individual has the right to not be subjected to any cruel or unusual treatment or punishment without valid reasoning.
Equality Rights
The right to be free of discrimination because of race, national or ethnic origin, religion, gender, age, or mental or physical disabilities.
Responsibilities
Do not be discriminatory towards others.
Respect the rights and freedoms of others, no matter their ethnicity, culture, sex, sexuality, or personal hardships.
Real Life Examples
A group of diverse individuals are given equal opportunity to apply for a job. The only elements that are taken into consideration are experience, knowledge, and skill level.
Women and men were considered equal when trying our for the sports team. Both are viewed as being just as capable of playing the sport as the other.
