Created by the Soviet Union in 1957 and was launched on October 4th 1957. It was created to collect data in the ionosphere

The first satellite that America attempted to launch was the Vanguard TV3 on December 6, 1957, but it crashed on live T.V.
The Explorer was the first successful satellite to be launched by America, it was launched on January 31,1958

Man in Space 
The Soviet Union were the first to put a man in space. His name was Yuri Gagarin. Yuri took a flight on the Vostok 1 spacecraft which launched on April 12th 1961
America was the first to land a man on the moon. His name was Neil Armstrong and he took the Apollo 11 to the moon on July 16, 1969

Soviet Union and America collaboration 
Following the moon landing the U.S.S.R and the U.S. both started working towards a new project. They were hoping to create a joint space craft where Soviet astronauts and American astronauts could work together.
The U.S.S.R and the U.S. ended up creating Apollo-Soyuz mission. The Apollo-Soyuz mission launched in July 1975 and successfully joined two spacecrafts together.

The Apollo program was created in 1961 and had a very tragic start. On their first mission to get Apollo 13 into space the oxygen tanks malfunctioned exploding the spacecraft and killing everyone inside it
Apollo's most successful mission was Apollo 11, the first spacecraft to get a man on the moon.
