Assessments!
Diagnostic Assessments
-
Purpose: To identify potential learning problems before the year starts, so that learning disabilities might be identified.
Advantages/Disadvantages: Sometimes these measure a single trait, not the learner as a whole. But could identify a potential issue before it can fully bloom.
This is an assessment FOR learning, because it will shape
how the learner is progressed.
An example would be a beginning of the year pre-test on content that has at least been covered the year before.
Formative Assessments
-
-
Advantages/Disadvantages: Can identify problems immediately, but also measures only a single trait.
This is an assessment FOR learning because it is occurring during the unit and will determine how the learner moves forward in the unit.
-
Summative Assessments
Defintion: An assessment placed at the end of a unit to measure the learning that was done during the unit.
-
Advantages/Disadvantages: Can be used to evaluate learning on a long-term basis. Sometimes after a long period of time and the student might not understand, there comes a tough decision on whether to move on from the content or not.
This is an assessment OF learning because this type of assessment takes place after content has been presented in its entirety.

High-Stakes Assessments
Definition: Any test used to make important decisions about students, educators, schools, and districts.
Purpose: This type of testing creates accountability across the board to ensure that all of the parties involved are doing their part for education.
Advantages/Disadvantages: These tests can measure if ultimately, teachers are effective in their methods or not. However, doing this too often can lead to test fatigue in the students and can cause lower performance across the board.
This is an assessment OF learning because the students are given the tests after they have been taught content.
An example of this type of testing is (in my state) the AZMERIT test, which is the state standardized test given to my students.
Portfolio Assessment
-
-
Advantages/Disadvantages: Can promote self-evaluation in students and also provides flexibility in measuring achievements. This type of assessment does take a long time to conduct, however.
This type of assessment is OF learning because the student must have results and completed work for the data to be present.
An example of this type of assessment would be collecting data from a student over the course of a quarter and examining the body of work in comparison to the standards taught during that time period.
Authentic Assessment
Definition: The measurement of intellectual accomplishments that are worthwhile, significant, and meaningful from learning content.
Purpose: To have the students perform a task on which they will be graded based on rubric adherence.
Advantages/Disadvantages: These assessments, like authentic assessments, measure the student's ability to use their knowledge and skills gained in order to complete a task. If the student fails to see the connection, then the task is not able to be completed.
This is an assessment OF learning because the students are using skills gained from their learned information.
An example of this would be to have students create a drawing of a room on a piece of paper, measure the dimensions and translate them into real-life lengths using a scale factor.
Self Assessment
Definition: Students reflect on skills to see where improvements can be made and where strengths lie.
Purpose: The purpose is to have students consider their own performance and identify areas of improvement and areas of strength as well.
Advantages/Disadvantages: Students can really take ownership of their learning by seeing what they can do better in their learning. If the students can identify their own problems, then it might be motivational for them to know what their own mistakes were.
This can be either an assessment OF learning or FOR learning, depending on how you use it. When doing things like revising a paper, then they can do it while in the middle of a unit. If they are doing things like test corrections, then it can be an assessment OF learning to see where they went wrong and how it can be fixed.
An example of this can be going over tests from the end of the module and correcting their tests and writing down what answers they got wrong and why the answer itself was wrong.
Peer Assessments
Definition: Students examine the work of their classmates based on benchmarks given by the instructor.
Purpose: This allows students to engage more deeply with the material by examining processes and supported answers by determining what is right and what is wrong.
Advantages/Disadvantages: The students share responsibilities in examining their peers' work, however this can be distorted by students not giving appropriate feedback on an assignment for one reason or another.
This is an assessment OF learning because the students are using their learned skills to essentially assess another student's work.
An example of this would be student looking over their friend's test corrections to see what answers were still incorrect and writing notes as to why they are still incorrect.
