Anti-epileptic drugs
Enhancing GABA
-
Very effective given together in status epilepticus and during seizures, poor long-term solution (decreased neuronal activity)

Pharmacokinetics
Most p450 - contraindications, Gabapentin not metabolised
Large variation in dosage (phenytoin albumin binding and p450 induction, steep-dose-concentration curve)
Oral, some IV, IM, rectal. Oral useful for long term, others useful for during seizures

Na+ Channel Inactivation
Voltage dependent and use dependent block because proportion of inactive channels increases with depolarization and repetitive firing.
Carbamazepine, phenytoin stabilizes inactive state of channel until drug dissociates
