- - - - Government control over it's citizens to the extent where it obstructs an individuals ability to think, act, move, and develop one's full potential.

      - "Gee-I could tell that one was a dozy," said Hazel
        "You can say that again," said George
        "Gee-I could tell that one was a dozy" said Hazel
        This is an example of irony, as Hazel took George's sarcastic comment seriously, and repeat her phrase.
        
        "She must have been extraordinarily beautiful, because the mask she wore was hideous. And it was easy to see she was the most strongest and graceful of all the dancers, for her handicap bags were as big as those worn by a 200 pound man.
        
        ""If you see this boy," said the ballerina, "do not - I repeat, do not - try to reason with him.""
        This is ironic because the ballerina describes Harrison as a boy, which doesn't at all allude to the fact that he is seven foot tall and carries 300 pound handicaps at all times.
      - "she must have been extraordinarily beautiful, because the mask she wore was hideous" "her handicaps were as big as those worn by 200 pound men"
  - - - "It wasn't clear at first as to what the bulletin was about, since the announcer, like all announcers, had a serious speech impediment. For about half a minute, and in a state of high excitement, the announcer tried to say, "Ladies and Gentlemen."
        He finally gave up, handed the bulletin to a ballerina to read."
        This is an example of dark humour where Vonnegut included a humorous scene based on the speech impediment of the news reporter. The scene did show another way of how everyone is equal but the joke was still based on someone's inability to do something.
- - - - Harrison Bergeron is characterised through his intelligence and strength "And it was in that clammy month that the H-G men took George and Hazel Bergeron's fourteen- year-old son, Harrison, away." The audience understands that for him to be taken away by the handicappers, he must be exceptional in some form.
      - George has vivid flashbacks of Harrison being taken away from him and his wife Hazel, but his thoughts are cut short.
        After Harrison and the Empress were shot and killed, George and Hazel couldn’t remember a thing and they went on with their lives

  - - - The noises sent through George's handicap are an example of imagery used in the text. The author describes these handicaps and sets the scene for what its like to live in the year 2081. The noises symbolize the subconscious thought that something isn't right

      - the birdshot and the handicaps represents the society's idea of equality is imposssible.
      - "Harrison rips off his handicaps" This symbolises he is breaking free from his personal cage while everyone else wants to remain in their cages.
      - The symbols are shown in Harrison Bergeron through the handicaps chosen. These handicaps symbolise the government having control of them, and how they limit society. The masks for the beautiful. Weights for the strong and devices that make deafening noises every 20 seconds for the smart.

      - The use of similes is broad throughout the text of Harrison Bergeron, this is especially apart when Harrison breaks into the studio. There are many similies used to describe him such as: "Harrison looked like a walking junkyard". Similies are used to describe his strength: "Harrison tore of his handicaps like wet tissue paper" and "the bar snapped like celery".
