During the presidency of Andrew Johnson there was a political rift between him and the radical republicans

The radical republicans were wanting to get justice and punish the south for leaving the Union. Johnson though wanted to slowly integrate the south back into the Union just like Lincoln wanted to.
Lincoln and Johnson

Abraham Lincoln wanted to let the South become a full fledged part of the Union again. He believed that the South should not be punished since they were the Unions brothers.
However some southern sympathizer didn't like that the Union had won and so he shot Abraham Lincoln killing him

Andrew Johnson was inaugurated soon after Lincoln died. Johnson was as interested in Lincoln in bringing the South back and he continued Lincolns efforts during his presidency.
