Petroleum waxes
- Crude oil transported from refiness derive from lubricating oil.
- Categories of petroleum waxes
2. Microcrystalline
- Produce from combination pf heavy lube distillate & residual oil
- Differ from paraffin by having poor define crystalline structure, darker colour & generally higher viscosity & melting point.
- Range from soft and tacky to hard and brittle depending on the compositional balance
3. Petrolatum
- Derive from heavy residual oil & separated by dilution and filtering process.
- Microcrystalline in nature and semi-solid at room temperature.
- Slack wax *refer to petroleum wax containing anywhere from 3-5 % oil content.
- Scale wax refer to wax containing 1-3% oil content.
- Fully refine paraffin wax is wax that had nearly all oil refine out of it. ( less that 0.5% oil)
1. Paraffin
- Derive from light lubricating oil distillate
- obtain predominantly straight chain hydrocarbon with average length of 20 to 30
