The Nervous System: coordinates the workings of the body by collecting information from the environment and processing it
PERIPHERAL nervous system: brings information from the senses to the CNS, and information from the CNS to muscles and glands
AUTONOMIC NS: responsible for vital functions such as breathing, digestion, sexual arousal etc.
sympathetic branch: stimulates functions involved in the 'fight or flight' response, e.g. increased ventilation and heart rate, dilated pupils, stimulated saliva production
-
SOMATIC NS: receives information from the sensory receptors and transmits them to the CNS, and in turn transmits information from the CNS to direct muscle movement
