CASE STUDY - MASDAR CITY, Abu Dhabi
The start to a fully sustainable city. Preserved for future generations.
The project was started in 2006 and phase 1 (a million square miles was completed by 2015) The whole project will be finished in 2025 when it will be home to over 40,000 people.
To provide their renewable energy they use:
Concentrated solar power that cools water for the air conditioning in offices
Vacuum panels that are cheaper and heat water (boiling)
They have a site of solar panels that cover 22 hectares, generating 17,000 megawatt hours per year - this is more than the city needs to power it.
No waste goes to landfill, all is re-cycled EG - wood for landscaping
They have a huge research institute within the city, thats constantly updating technology
Results:
Masdar city is 10 degrees cooler than anywhere else in Abu Dhabi due to special architecture (wind tower that cools the air, building built closer together for shade, no cars - they are driverless, electric and underground)
