Evaluation
Alcohol
Strengths
- Can help alcoholics when used alongside another treatment
- Little Albert showed that classical conditioning can be used to give a fear response
Weaknesses
- Effects may not be permanent
- Association may fade if they drink without taking the emetic drug
- Relapse rates are high: the patient doesn't need to know the reason for their addiction, so might be vulnerable to the substance again
Nicotine
Weaknesses
- The effectiveness of aversive stimuli with smokers received limited empirical evidence to date, so not fully known how effective this treatment is to achieved long-term cessation of smoking
- Existing trials show little evidence for a specific effect of silver acetate in promoting smoking cessation
- The lack of effect reflects poor compliance with a treatment whose rationale is to create an unpleasant stimulus, rather than the treatment itself being ineffective
