Messiah means anointed one in English

It was a sign that God had chosen someone for a special purpose

Anointed means to have oil poured over your head

Priests, prophets and kings were anointed in the old testament

The line of Kings from David died out in 586BC

The jews were yearning for a new king

People expected a Messiah who would bring God's rules to Earth

To establish peace and justice in the land

Some people wanted a warrior king who would get rid of the Romans and free Israel

Jesus did not want anyone knowing he was the Messiah

He never referred to himself as Messiah because:

The time was not right, too early.

People would not like that Jesus was a peaceful Messiah not a political one

He could have got into trouble with the authorities
