Positive reinforcement
Is everyone in the class focused and on task?
Is the student disrupting others?
Give a non-verbal warning such as eye contact, standing near the problem student.
Give a verbal warning- interrupt instructions with their name, call the student and their behavior out.
Follow established rules for infractions- as this is the second time in the same class, consistently follow whatever punishment the class agreed on in the initial class.
Give a verbal thanks to the student, but remind them by pointing to other model students in the classroom of the normal behavior expected of them.
Give student non-verbal recognition as thanks near the end of the exercise, such as a smile, pat on the back. Or, consider whispering in their ear that you appreciated their ability to get back on track.
Make mention that you recognize how hard it is for that student, so offer them two options- either the teacher chooses a buddy for them to make sure they are keeping up to date on the notes and exercises, or they can be separated from their classmates.
Does this solve the problem?
Make sure to give special thanks to that student for their effort, and to their buddy if they have one. Try and show appreciation in more than 1 way, but don't make a big deal out of it, but rather that it is expected.
Warn student that they have one strike against them, assign a buddy. Make clear the consequences of three strikes, as well as the types of behavior that will cause this. Ask them to focus on one particular behavioral issue they are having and work on controlling it.
Does this solve the problem?
Discuss with the student how they behavior is affecting not only other students but themselves. Ask them for homework to write a paragraph or two explaining how they intend to handle the problems they faced differently- they need to have three strategies prepared. Next class, if student doesn't have such a list prepared, have your own ready to give to him. Mention that you will be emailing their parent if they get 3 strikes.
Mention to the student at the end of class how proud of them you are that they worked and avoided making the same mistakes. Tell them how much you appreciate the effort, and try to spend more time forming a relationship with that student when time is available.
Allow student time to get their act together, but make mention to that student later personally, away from other students. "Hey, I noticed you had some trouble focusing on that last exercise, is something bothering you? I know you usually are great in my class so I'll let it slide this once. Do you want to talk about it?"
At the end of the exercise, thank the class for being on task, tell them to give themselves a pat on the back. If this has been done multiple times in a row, consider giving a no homework pass.
