Forces
Amrutha Balla (501)
Newton's Laws of Motion
Second Law
Acceleration is net force divided by mass
a=f/m
Example: using mass of a golf ball and its net force to find its acceleration when it was hit.
Example: finding the acceleration of the rocket using the mass and the net forces acting on the rocket.
Third Law
Objects have opposite forces when exerted
Example: kids playing tug of war (rope is pulled in opposite directions, so there is opposite force)
Example: water rocket when the rocket is launched( water is pushing down while the rocket is being pushed up)
First Law
net force = zero
state of motion = no change
Example: when soccer ball is at rest before it is kicked and moving at a constant speed after being kicked.
Example: when the rocket is at rest, there is no change in the state of motion (due to balanced force)
Work
w=fd
done when a force acts on an object in the direction the object moves
Energy
Potential
stored energy as result of position / shape
PE=mgh
Kinetic
energy of motion
KE=1/2 mv^2
Mechanical
energy associated with the motion and position of everyday objects
ME=KE+PE
transferred by a force moving an object through distance
