mechanisms that have been documented in the literature include:
direct competition for a common resource - habitat feature or food
indirect competition - competitive effects resulting from trophic linkages
pre-emptive competition - occupancy of space, based on presence, that excludes another
over growth - simply one species growing over another
allelopathy - biochemical effect of organism A on B
territoriality - when it is between species it is also termed interference competition
strength will influence population growth
intense and unavoidable
Between conspecifics, for niche space
results in natural selection
between species
usually less intense than intra-specific competition
can have dramatic consequences for competing populations, leading to local extinction
also results in natural selection
2) as population size increase, however, the presence of one population (1) begins to interfere with the growth of the other population (2) with 1 using resources required by population 2
1) when population numbers are low, resources are not limiting and both populations experience rapid (exponential) growth
