6.1 Darwin's Theory
Who was Darwin?
Englishman in early 1800's
studied plants and animals
developed theory of evolution
What did Darwin find on Galapagos Islands?
unusual creatures
iguanas
giant tortoises
finches
animals were all slightly diffent
finches had different beaks
ones that ate insects had narrow beaks
ones that ate seeds had wide beaks
How did the findings influence his theory
He reasoned that all the finches were related
concluded that the finches changed over time to develop beaks that he saw
hypothesized that this was responsible for all different animals and plants
How did Darwin explain his hypothesis
wrote a book called The Origin of Species
proposed that all species on earth evolved through process called natural selection
Natural Selection
idea that individuals that are better adapted to their environment survive
Darwin identified three factors that affect it
Overproduction
many species produce more offspring than survive
sea turtles
Variation
members of the same species have different traits
Competition
food and resources are limited, so members compete for resources
How did Darwin believe Natural selection worked
