PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
-
VARIETY
Variety is a kind of visual diversity that brings
many different ideas, media, and elements
together in one composition
Variety is a collection of ideas, elements, or
materials that are fused together into one
design
Artists use a multiplicity of values, textures,
colors, and
so on to intensify the impact of a work
BALANCE
-
Balance refers to the distribution of
elements, whether unified or varied,
within a work
CONTRAST
-
For example, a painting may have bright
colors that contrast with dull colors or
angular shapes that contrast with rounded
shapes.
RHYTHM
Rhythm is a reoccurring movement
or pattern, which can produce a
feeling of motion in the design.
Size, shape, color, spacing, angles and
texture of the materials are all factors
in placing rhythm in a design and
can help lead the eye in some
direction.
EMPHASIS
Emphasis is the method used to
draw attention to a part of the
design by making it the focal point
or the main idea.
MOVEMENT
Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes
through the artwork, often to focal areas. Such
movement can be directed along lines edges,
shape and color within the artwork.
The Principles of Design are
the ways that artists use the
Elements of Art to create a great
composition.
