Parts of Emotions
Outward Expression
Non-verbal expressions accompanying vocal cues (Ex. Facial expressions, tone of voice, posture, gestures)
Physiological Change
Changes that offer insights to one’s emotions if one is aware of them (Ex. Increased heart rate)

Types of Emotions
1. Facilitative
- Contribute to effective functioning
- Have a lower intensity
- Have a shorter duration
- Ex. Happiness, mild sadness, anger
2. Debilitative
- Hinder/prevent effective functioning
- Have a higher intensity
- Have a longer duration
- Ex. Intense fear, rage
Strategies to Manage Debilitative Emotions
- Monitor emotional reactions to allow for debilitating feelings to be noticed
- Note the activating event to increase awareness of the trigger, which may be a person, specific types of individuals, settings, or topics of conversation
- Record self talk to analyze thoughts that link the trigger & associated feelings
- Dispute irrational beliefs by choosing an alternate belief that is more sensible
