Assessments
Formative: This type of assessment takes place during a unit often times during instruction. The teacher uses this information to assess student learning and how to adapt instruction.
Types
Self-Assessment: when students reflect on their own learning and analyze correctness or incorrectness of their own answers.
Disadvantages: students may not really care about their own assessment. Students who are struggling often find individual self-assessment difficult because they do not understand why they answered the problems incorrectly. However, they may just require more scaffolding and support to be successful in this sort of assessment.
-
Example: Students in the 7th grade classroom I teacher are sometimes asked to grade thier own papers. Students are also asked to do corrections on tests and quizes. In this way students can see where their mistakes are and better understand how to correct those mistakes.
Advantages: This is critical for student ability to understand what they know and what they do not know. Being able to reflect on your own learning is a skill that can be very useful for students.
Peer Assessment: this is when another student determines if their peer reached the desired criteria for an assignment.
Disadvantages: a major issue with peer review is callousness and students being mean to each other. Students can be very harsh and it is important that the teacher be very aware of the sort of feedback students are giving.
Assessment for learning: Peer Assessment help students think critically about their learning. Often it is helpful for students to have to explain to another person why something was correct or incorrect.
Example: This can be done with any sort of paper assignment in my math class with would be done with tests when students are asked to trade and grade. However, this is not normally my preference as students can be very harsh towards each other.
Advantages: Brings another level for students to achieve in takng responsibility for their own learning. Often students may be more critical of each others work than the teacher. This can be a good thing as it gives students blunt feedback on their work.
Disadvantages: Takes more time and planning for the teacher. Often times student may not take informal or ungraded assessments seriously meaning that the teacher's data will to incorrect.
Assessment for learning and of learning: The assessment of learning is the aspect of assessing if the student has learned the content. The assessment for learning is in the nature of the teacher taking that information and adapting instruction for the students.
Advantages: Also the teacher to change direction and reteach where needed. It also helps the teacher identify which students understand concepts and which need more scaffolding and support.
Example: This can range from quizzes to tickets (a question the teacher looks at to assess student learning quickly). It can also be homework assignments from mathgames.com which gives the teacher immediate results about where studnets are at in their knowledge in order to inform instruction.
-
Authentic: can be formative or summative in that it provides direct measures and it "captures the constructive nature of learning" (Nast, 2017)
-
Assessment of learning and for learning. It is an assessment of learning because the teacher can see where the student is at in their knowledge. It is also an assessmen for learning because there can be a dialogue between student and teacher to enhance learning.
-
-
Diagnostic: this is a pre-assessment, such as a pre-test or quiz to determine student knowledge of upcoming unit information.
Disadvantages: Students tend to perform poorly on these tests which often makes students feel insecure of stupid especially in regards to math.
Assessment for learning: primarily as assessment meant to determine instruction it is for leaning. However, it also assess what students remember meaning it is an assessment of learning as well.
