Resistance to S.I evaluation
good
Research support
Gamson et. al.
Procedure
Advertisement in paper
asked to have a discussion
divided in to 9 groups
then asked to discuss openly about their attitude towards Mr. C' lifestyle after getting told about the situation Mr C was in
Then co-coordinator turned of camera and instructed them to to augured as if they were offended by Mr. C's behaviour
Then switched the cameras back on.
they asked to discuss that the company was perfectly reasonable to sack them
The groups soon realised that they were being manipulated to produce evidence supporting the Oil company's position
at end asked to sign a consent from to use tape in court
Aim
to see whether people in groups would disobey in a situation where there was an unjust authority
Findings
29/33 groups there was successfully resisted unjust authority
in 29/33 the majority refused to sign the consent form
9/33 groups even threatened legal action action against MHRC
Some even threatened to confiscate the videotapes of the discussion
Conclusion
Showed that people can rebel against unjust authority when there is social support
Levels of disobedience were higher in this study than that of Milgram's study
this may be due to the participants working in groups
Allen and Levine
found that conformity decreases when there was one dissenter in a Asch type of experiment
this occurred due dissenter wore thick glasses and said he he had difficulty with their vision- no position to judge the length of line
supports view that resistance is not just motivated by following what someone else says but it enables someone to be free of the pressure from the group
Holland
repeated Milgram's baseline study.
Used people with Internal LOC and Exteranal Loc
Found that 37% of internals disobeyed. whereas only 23% of externals din't continue
internals show greater resistance to authority
Increases the validity of LOC explanation and our confidence that it can explain resistance
Bad :unamused:
Contradictory research (Twenge et. al. 2004)
Analysed data from American obedience study over a 40 year period
Found that over this time people became more resistant to obedience but also more external
if resistacne were linked to an internal LOC, we would expect them to be internal
this changes the link between internal LOC and increasing resistant behaviour
it is possible that the the results are due to changing society- where many things are out of personal control
Limited role of LOC
Role of LOC may be exaggerated.
LOC only comes to play in novel situations
Very little influence over our behaviour in familiar situation- where our previous experiences will always be more important
means that people who have confomited or obeyed in specific situations in the past are likely to do to do so again, even if they have a high internal LOC
