Geography - Ecosystems & Biomes
What is an ecosystem
Short for ecological system
Plants and Animals depend on
: Weather, Soil, Sun, Atmosphere
An ecosystem contains 2 components
Biotic Factor
: A living biological factor that may influence an organism or ecoystem
Examples of Biotic Factors
: Predation, Parasitism, disease, competition
Abiotic Factor
: A non living physical factor that may influence an organism or ecosystem
Examples of Abiotic Factors
: Temperature, pH of soil, salinity, precipitation
A community of organisms and their physical environment
Plants and animals found in a particular location are referred to as community
Trophic Levels
A producer is an Autotroph
A consumer is a heterotroph
Trophic Level 1
: the producer, anything that can photosynthesise
Trophic Level 2
: the Herbivore, the primary consumer
Trophic Level 3 and 4
: the carnivores, 3 being the secondary consumer and 4 being the tertiary consumer
Biomes
Tundra - very dry and cool
Desert - Very dry, mostly hot but can be cold. (Arid Climate)
Taiga (confierous forest) - very cold climate
Deciduous Forest - Moderate Climate
Mediterranean - Warm Climate
Savanna - Summer Temperature that rarely changes throughout the year
Rainforest - Equatorial Climate - no seasonal difference. Always tropical and very wet
Thar Desert
Challenges for development
Accessibility
The road network is very limited ; high temps melt tarmac + wind blows sand over roads
Most places only accessible by camel
Public transport is overcrowded unsafe buses
Extreme temperatures
Working in heat is tiring
Leads to water shortages via evaporation
Fact : Average temperature is 27°C
Water supply
Water has increased demand because of population growth and development of the farming industry
Water is stored in natural and man-made ponds
Water can be obtained from underground sources (aquifers using wells)
Sand is hard to build on
Hinders structural integrity. Lack of settlements and services
