Life of a monk in early christian Ireland
Normally
monasteries
would have
stone walls
built around them, they weren't very high, I believe these walls weren't used to repel attacks, but to
slow them down.
All monasteries had a
round tower
that the monks could hide all their treasure and themselves if they were under attack, they also had the door above ground level with a
ladder
leading to it, so when under attack, they can hide in the tower and pull up the ladder so the raiders could not get them, the attackers would try to
smoke them out.
Large monasteries sometimes had large
ditches/trenches
surrounding the the monastery itself, so attackers would have no chance to get past the
walls
, so they would need to go through the entrance, which would be
blocked off.
The
abbot
had his own house that would be found near the
church,
the abbot is the elected leader of the monastery.
the
refectory
is where all of the monks ate their food, one monk would read out loud the gospel while the others ate, no one was to interrupt or speak.
The
church
was the
main building
itself, as its where they prayed, and it was gods house.
The monks would sleep in small cells/huts, unlike the Abbot, who slept in a house like structure.
The
scriptorium
was where they copied the
gospel
and other holy books, its also where the largest book in history was made,
the book of kells.
There was also a
guest house
where people could stay for shelter.
The
land
itself technically isn't a building, but i'm putting it up here anyways, they used the land for
farming
, which also helped the monasteries to become
self-sufficient.
If
death
was to occur, the dead monks would be buried in
cist graves
, which is very close to the
church.
The monks would do
metalwork,
and they would make
gold
chalices with
complex patterns
and
glass studs
.
They would have to
farm
for food aswell.
They would have to
pray
for hours straight.
They would have to
copy
the
gospel/bible
as well.
A lot of the time they would be
isolated
from villages and other place that have people in them, as they will be less likely to get attacked, but if they do, they will get no backup. it will also be harder to spread the word of god.
Sometimes they would be close to
civilization,
but they would be more likely to be attacked, and if they do get attacked, they may have backup. they also will be able to spread the word of god much easier.
