Counting Principles (Gelman & Gallistel 1978)
• Able to recite number sequence (stable order principle)
• Make a one-to-one correspondence between item and saying the number (one-to- one principle)
• Note: One-to-one correspondence is set up between the objects of a set and the number names i.e. each numeral name is matched in order to an object in a group.
• Know that the order of counting the objects doesn’t matter (order irrelevance)
• Realise that the last number they say represents the total number of objects in the set (cardinal principle)
• These principles can be applied to any set of objects (abstraction principle)
