Hurricanes
Miami
You live in Miami and there has been an evacuation put in place, however many people in your neighborhood have said evacuating is not necessary as they have never been impacted by a hurricane before. You are new to the Miami as you just moved for work. This year has been a very hot summer where water temperatures are reaching a seasonal high temperature of 30 degrees celsius in the top 50 m of the ocean. The people that told you this information are referring to a category 3 hurricane that hit Miami a couple years ago, meaning the winds were ranging from 178-208 mph. The main worry the news channel says, is the flooding and the high speed winds with cranes that are on top of buildings flying around the city of Miami. However, since you live in Miami and Miami has recently spent 400 million dollars on putting drainage systems, and elevating roads to help decrease the impact storm surge has on Miami. “hurricane proof” windows into buildings. Are you going to decide to stay or to leave?
Stay
You deiced to stay at your house in Miami, although we the city of Miami was evacuated. A category 5 hurricane was supposed to hit around 4pm today, and it is 4:30 and calm out.You look outside and the sun is shining, and it looks as if the storm has ended. Should you take your dog for a walk now she has not been for one yet today or should you wait?
Wait for the storm to over by watching on T.V or listening to the radio to find the correct time to walk your dog
You think you heard a tree crash into your garage (not attached to your house), and there is a window in your kitchen that looks out at your garage, should you go check and see if you garage is ok?
Yes
You died, as when you went to check your garage a tree came crashing through your window and killed you. Something you can do to prevent this is taping or boarding up your windows and garage. However, winds are so strong during a category 5 hurricane it is difficult to prevent this.

No
You survived. Lucky this is because you are in a city like Miami, and your house is very strong.
Walk your dog
You died, you were actually in the eye of the hurricane. While you think the storm was over, you were very close to the eyewall, which contains the hurricanes strongest winds, as well as the wind direction will change after the eye will pass . The eye and eyewall were able to form because of windsheer. You should always make sure that you are listening to the radio. When living in a town the is more economically developed it is unlikely that radio connection will go down during a hurricane, as radios are important for critical information during a storm or other natural disaster.
Leave
Before you leave you should contact your family and love ones to let them know where you are leaving your house and tell them where you are going , or should you keep it to yourself and not bother your family or loved ones
Leave them alone.
You died, as you should always contact your family before you evacuate and alert them for where you are going.

Haiti
You live in Haiti. You are a farmer and live on the ocean with your crops. It is summer time, and it has been a very hot summer where water temperatures are reaching a seasonal high temperature of 30 degrees celsius in the top 50 m of the ocean. Emergency crews came knocking on your door today saying, that a category 5 hurricane is expected to hit the island of Haiti in 36 hours and they would like to relocate residence of the south side of the island to inland shelters. A category 5 hurricane means that there will most likely be power outage for months as well as winds over 252 mph, as well as many trees and power lines will be knocked down which could isolate you from being able to access supplies . The radio said that this hurricane has brought severe flooding due to storm surge from the islands that have already been impacted. You are currently in your house by the ocean that is very far from civilization but your crops are your source of income and do not want to say goodbye to your belongings. If you leave now intime to get to a shelter you will not have time to properly protect your crops from getting damaged. The shelter is not as strong as your house, but has supplies that may be needed after the storm that you can no longer purchase in stores such as food and something to sleep one. Do you stay at your house by the ocean or go to the shelter?
Stay at your house by the ocean, as it is not crowded you do not have to share supplies, as well as your home stronger and will be able to stay standing with stronger winds.
You decided to stay in your house by the ocean, with your dog. 36 hours have past and the excepted land fall on Haiti was 4:00pm. It is currently 4:30, and you can no longer here rain and you see the sun peering into your home. Your dog has not been for a walk all day, and is getting very anxious. Should you take your dog for a walk or stay at home?
Walk your dog
You died, you were actually in the eye of the hurricane. You were the closest the eyewall of the hurricane, which contains the strongest winds of the hurricane as well as the wind direction will change once the eye of the hurricane has passed .The eye and eyewall were able to form because of windshear. You should always make sure that you are listening to the radio or in the case of no signal which is very possible in a Less economically developed country such as Haiti. Then you should wait until officials have told you to leave your house.

Stay inside
Your house begins to flood, and is becoming full of water. The reason that your house is flooding is because of storm surge which is caused by rising waters due to the wind. As this is a category 5 hurricane the winds are very strong, as well as you are on the south- western side of the island and due to the coriolis effect it is causing there to be larger storm surge on the south-western side of the island. As the coriolis effect causes wind to a direction that pushes the water into the shore creating a larger storm surge The house is only a one story house but there is a way you can climb to the roof. Should you climb to the roof or stay inside?
Stay inside
You should have gone inland to help prevent flooding as well as rescue crews will be able to accesses you easier if you are at a shelter . A tree fell on you and you died.It is important that you understand that if you were to survive, since you stayed at your home near the ocean it would put you at the risk of fallen trees and power lines to isolate you from rescue crews. This is an issue when living on the south-western side as it is a rural community. Fallen trees and power lines is very likely to occur in a category 5 hurricane. Living is a less economically developed country it will most likely take longer for power to come back on, as well as for rescue crews to be able to reach you.
Leave
You got taken away by storm surge as it swept through your home. Goodbye. It is important that you went somewhere with people, as if you were to survive the storm there would be the possibility that power lines and trees would isolate you from the rest of you community. As well as you always want to make sure you are staying caught up the the storm on a portable radio, so you know what is going on and if it is safe to leave your house.

Go to the shelter inland, as there are supplies your do not have at home as well as rescue crews will be able to reach you at the centre but not your home.
You have decided to leave and go inland to avoid storm surge. You are staying in a small house with 11 other people , and you have one 1L jug of of water left. Should you finish the jug of water and hope that the re will be water left in stores that you can purchase more before the storm starts.
