ELA Outsiders Story Prewriting Dally's Death - Dally POV (Starts a little before Ch. 10)
Events From Book
Dally pushes Johnny's hair back
slams fist at wall, "dammit" MOVE FROM SUBDUED GRIEF INTO CRAZED GRIEF
Johnny dies
Make this gut wrenching, then move into crazed
disbelieving
"suddenly he bolted through the door and down the hall"
convo with Johnny
How is Dally feeling seeing Johnny like this?
robs grocery store (took car)
I disagree with how the movie portrayed this scene - doesn't use gun until he reaches the lot
visit Johnny in hospital (threaten doc with knife)
calls gang - cops are after him
pulls out gun in lot
though are those of a madman sort of
death
nothing leading up to it, sort of just describe pulling out the gun and hearing the sots and then stop.
Adapting
some
events from the book to Dally's POV shouldn't change them too much, just because the same thing's still happening, just focus on changing how the event is viewed/percieved
Mind/Toughts
"savage defiance"
I want to explore how his relationship with his family affects how he thinks and sees the world - hatefully, probably
I'd like to try and write him in a almost- sociopathic manner (unless it involves Johnny)
Explore his mind- what makes him act the way he does? ~Why was he rude to Cherry and Marcia
~What makes him think that he can't love or care for anyone/thing?
~When Johnny dies, what aspect of him and/or his life is it that makes him lose it?
The Grieving Process
Denial
First few seconds after Johnny actually lets go. Quickly moves on to grieving
Anger
Slamming the wall, "DAMMIT" - robs store
Bargaining
(when he was saying "this is what you get for helping people" - out of order because Johnny was alive when he said this, but he was grieving Johnny's hospitalization
Depression
Robs store, calls friends, kills self
Acceptance
I don't think Dally ever really makes it to the acceptance stage, as I believe it is in his depression that he kills himself
