Differentiated Learning
After delivering a lesson, hold a formative assessment
Does the class as a whole perform such that they demonstrate understanding of the lesson?
Yes
Are there any outliers, or students who demonstrate appreciably low/high grasp of the material?
Yes - High
Is this the normal pattern for the student?
Yes
Student is consistently a high performer and may need additional interventions specific to them and like-minded students. Suggested interventions:
Pair gifted students together to place them among peers and encourage healthy competition.
Ensure that there are content rich questions for these students to pursue. A few more higher level questions may be beyond most of the students in the class but can keep a higher performer engaged, occupied and interested, especially with an end product.
Introduce research based projects that higher performers can complete to their level of interest and satisfaction.
No
Pay attention to the results and keep this in mind for the future. Hopefully this is a new trend and reflects new dedication to the class instead of a more negative response.
No
Great! Move on and congratulate yourself for a perfect lesson.
Yes - Low
Assess their performance against their prior performance. Is it an aberration, or is it consistent?
Normal
Implement additional interventions that are tailored to the student's specific needs and be aware that they may need more help, patience and effort than than other students. Suggested interventions for students who are lower achievers but do not exhibit a learning disability:
Provide study guides/cheat sheets to help them be engaged with the lesson.
Include many visuals/audio during the lesson to maintain interest.
Provide small, discrete steps that are easy to follow to yield the expected end product.
Have the student repeat the directions (or as a class)
Abnormal
Approach the student to see if there are other issues at the moment. See if we can figure it out to prevent it becoming the new trend.
No
Identify the problem as best as possible and reteach the material. Focus on the concepts that are identified as being especially misunderstood.
