Developmental Levels
Emergent Readers need experiences with books, especially picture books. During this stage they become comfortable with books and start to recognize letters, words and patterns.
Early Readers make predictions about text and use illustrations to confirm predictions. They understand the background of the text, recognize stronger patterns and learn to take risks in reading.
Transitional Readers begin to read books that come in a series. They fully understand setting, characters and plot. They know strategies to help them understand and say words they may not know. They are fairly independent.
Fluent Readers are independent readers who are confident in their ability to understand text. Is able to read longer and more complex texts.
Reading
Guided reading involves a small group of students reading with the teacher. The groups are leveled. During the lesson they focus on one concept, not multiple; the lesson is simple. Every student has a copy of the book in their hands.
Interactive Read Aloud: the teacher does the work of reading so students can focus on things like characters and plot. Teachers model higher level thinking.
Shared Reading: every student has access to the text. The focus is on the act of reading. The text is typically at or slightly above reading level.
Writing
Interactive Writing teachers model reading and writing strategies. The students come up with the content and take turns writing on the board.
