Freedman, When is a Planet Not a Planet
Pluto has had much debate about whether or not it should be considered a planet because of its size.
Scientist were arguing about what the definition of planet means. The current definition of planet is "a celestial body distinguished from the fixed stars by having an apparent motion of its own (including the moon and sun), especially with reference to its supposed influence on people and events."
Overtime, the discussion of Pluto has reached out into society and diffused the idea of Pluto being a planet. Pluto doesn’t need science to rule out it’s classification, history will change over time by itself.
The popular perspective on something seems to be the one taken as fact. We tend to believe the "fact" that comes from scientist or those who study that particular thing.
Berger, Ways of Seeing
The perception of our world depends on one’s way of seeing - The way we see things and
describe things are based on our own knowledge and our beliefs of the world
Image embodies a way of seeing. Even a photograph. For photographs are not as is often assumed, a mechanical record. Every time we look at a photograph , we are aware, however slightly, of the photographer selecting that sight from an infinity of other possible sights. (10)
If you take a picture of a photograph it will not truly reflect the image of which you are capturing. The photographer has a certain perspective of which they are trying to capture. This is the beauty in photography.
Introduction
What is perspective? How big a role does it have in our life? In our experiences? What is my definition of perspective?
Start with what you think of California as a state. What are the general assumptions that you make when you think of CA?
Thesis: As you go through experiences in life everything that happens shapes your outlook on: people, ideas, places, even yourself. There is beauty in perspective because it is unique to the individual. However, it is something that can be manipulated by others that have the same perspective to make you see what they want.
Descartes, Discourse on the Method of Rightly..
traveling the world exposes you to new peoples, cultures and ideas. This was a big ideology that Descartes advocated.
use my personal experience traveling to Mexico, and some countries in Europe to agree with Descartes claim. By traveling I learned things that I would never had known if I didn't travel
But after I had been occupied several years in thus studying the book of theworld, and in essaying to gather some experience, I at length resolved to make myself anobject of study, and to employ all the powers of my mind in choosing the paths I oughtto follow, an undertaking which was accompanied with greater success than it wouldhave been had I never quitted my country or my books. (p.5)
Knowledge stems from experience, to gain those experiences one must have an open mind. :star:
Conclusion
Overall what we experience day to day, year to year all shape our own experiences; which therefore shape our perspectives. There is more power to perspective s than we give credit for.
Include personal experience of perspective from moving from San Diego to Merced and how much it has changed my outlook on small towns in rural areas.
Magic and the Brain
Magicians are skilled at manipulating what we can and can't see. They manipulate the cognition and attention in order to perform their tricks. There are a lot of things that happen behind the scenes.
There is science to neuromagic, this includes: visual illusions, optical illusion, lighting controls, but overall the biggest one is cognitive illusion. The science behind magic is very complicated that even neuroscientists are trying to catch up. (74)
Our perspective is limited to what our brain can allow us to see/interpret. Since our brain can only allow us to see a certain amount of things at one time there is much that can be missed during that time as well.
