Week 5: The Social Self
What is the "Self"?
Self is the connection between inner life and social world. Social self is created by society. It is the process of assigning meaning framed within a situation.

Sense of who we are is something that emerges and never stops emerging as we are constantly modifying who we are. The self is not essential or natural, it is social and a product of interaction.
Who are you?
Psychologist sees the self as something you are born with, for psychologists, who you are comes first and what you do is second. Three main characteristics of studying the self: Private possession, Reflects personality and has stable structure that shapes behaviour.
Sociologists recognize that people are the accumulation of experiences. The ways that we act is much more influenced by situations than by aspect of our personality. Sense of self as going to be largely dominated within a given situation.
Identity are dimensions of self, a situational precentation of self. You won'r be able to know who you are without defininf your r/s with others. Three main characteristics of studying the self for sociologist: Seeing it as a process, know that it is acquired and realized through r/s and it is fluid and changes over time and across situations.

Who are We?
This notion of "who are we" is always evolving and in the process of becoming, evolving and adapting. (processual)
Objectified: It can be seen as a product as well as a resource
Social, Discursive: It is imaginative and rooted in narrative.
Constructed: It is situated and therefore requires natming
