What is Information Literacy?
Definition
An Information Literate Individual is capable of doing six things.
Evaluate information and its sources clearly
Incorporate selected information into one's knowledge base
Access the required information effectively and efficiently
Use information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose
Determine the extent of information needed
Understand the economic, legal, and social issues surrounded the use of information, and access and use information ethically and legally
The ALA defines Information Literacy as "a set of abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information"
Importance
Because of the rising use of technology, children, students, and workers must be aware of the choices they have in choosing what information to absorb.
In a world plagued by "fake news" and paid advertisements on articles, it can be especially difficult to maneuver the internet. Information Literacy allows users to understand what they are viewing and evaluate it properly.
How to Teach Information Literacy to Children
It is important to begin teaching children about the information and media available to them, especially since so many children have access to technology at a young age.
The best way to teach young children about the information they interact with is to expose them to the different kinds of information, and reiterate what information is good, and what information is bad.
Additionally, it can be beneficial to have open discussions with children, asking them if they think what they are reading or viewing is true, and guiding them in the right direction.
Educators can also play a role in building up an understanding of information for young children.
Providing workshops, activities, and take-home worksheets about certain kinds of media can be beneficial to the development of media and information literacy skills.
Educators such as librarians can also provide helpful information to parents so they can protect what their children are viewing, depending on their views.
Information Literacy in the Library
The Library is one of the primary locations where students retrieve information, so it is important that the library staff are information and media literate, so they can properly help patrons and pass on the knowledge.
Librarians can access vital information about these forms of literacy and further assist their patrons
Librarians can use their special training to teach children to use their technology to the best advantage
Librarians can carry out information and media literacy workshops for classes
