1) Initiation: assembly of mRNA, tRNA, ribosome - small ribosomal subunit binds to 5' end of mRNA, moves along it until it reaches AUG, appropriate tRNA molecule bind to codon via anticodon (according to complementary base pairing), large subunit aligns itself to tRNA molecule at P site, forming complex w/ small subunit
2) Elongation: second tRNA molecule pairs w/ next codon in A site, AA in P site covalently attached (condensation) via peptide bond to AA in A site, tRNA in P site deacylated while tRNA in A site carries peptide chain
3) Translocation: ribosome moves along mRNA strand by one codon position in 5' to 3' direction, deacylated tRNA moves into E site, released, while tRNA carrying peptide chain moves to P site, another tRNA molecule attaches to next codon in unoccupied A site, process repeated
4) Termination: above repeat until ribosome reaches STOP codon; recruit release factor that signals for translation to stop, polypeptide released and ribosome dissembles back into two independent subunits
