Brain and Special Senses
-
-
Structure of the eye :
Vitreous humor: Viscous fluid occupying the posterior cavity. function is to maintain the shape of the eye and support the internal parts.
-
-
-
Tunics of the eyes
Choroid: Dark middle part, absorbs light to prevent reflection.
Retina: translucent inner tunic, small pit in the center is called the fovea centralis

-
Lacrimal gland: Produces tears that lubricate the eye. Tears containlysozyme which is an antibacterial enzyme.
Structure of the ear
Inner ear
Semicircular canals: 3 cavities at right angles to each other that contain sensory cells and fluid. Responsible for the sense of equilibrium.
Cochlea: Spiral bony chamber. contains fluid which is set in motion by sound waves picked up by the ear drum and transmitted via the ossicles through the oval window.
Organ of corti: composed of hair cells, these cells initiate the nerve impulses, which are transmitted to the temporal lobe for auditory perception.
External ear
-
Tympanic membrane aka ear drum, sound waves set it in motion.
-
Middle ear
-
Round window: waves of inner ear fluid press against this structure causing it to bulge into the middle ear cavity.
-
Eustachian tube: connects the middle ear with the nasopharynx of the throat and equalizes the air pressure on the two sides of the tympanic membrane.
