Definition of Maternity Leave
Maternity leave is the time-off work given when a female employee is pregnant with a child. Maternity Leave may be fully paid, part-paid or unpaid depending on whether the employee qualifies based on the eligibility criteria.
Definition of Extended Maternity Leave
Extended maternity leave is the additional time-off over and above the statutory provisions due to pregnancy and childbirth. Extended Maternity Leave may be fully paid, part-paid or unpaid leave and the duration is different from one organisation to another.

16 Weeks of Government-Paid Maternity Leave
Criteria
Child is a Singaporean
For Employees: Have served their employer for a continuous period of at least 3 months immediately before the birth of the child.
For self-employed: Have been engaged in their work for at least 3 continuous months and have lost income during the maternity leave period.
Have given their employer at least 1 week’s notice before going on maternity leave, and informed them as soon as possible of their delivery. Otherwise, they are only entitled to half the payment during maternity leave, unless they have a good reason for not giving the notice.
Paid by Employer
1st & 2nd Child: Pay for the first 8 weeks of the leave
Paid by Government
1st & 2nd Child: Pay for the last 8 weeks of the leave
3rd Child and more: Pay for all 16 weeks of the leave

12 Weeks of Maternity Leave
Criteria
Covered by Employment Act
Have served their employer for a continuous period of at least 3 months immediately before the birth of their child.
Paid by Employer
Pay the usual monthly salary for the first 8 weeks of leave
Criteria
Have worked for at least 3 continuous months before the birth of the child.
Have fewer than 2 living children of their own at the time of delivery. In the case of multiple births (e.g. twins, triplets, etc.) during the first pregnancy, still need to pay for first 8 weeks for next pregnancy
Have given their employer at least 1 week’s notice before going on maternity leave, and informed them as soon as possible of their delivery. Otherwise, they are only entitled to half the payment during maternity leave, unless they have a good enough reason for not giving the notice.
