What was the Transatlantic Slave Trade?
When did it take place?
-The first slave trade was in 1204 and Britain ended its slave trade in 1807.
Who was involved (what countries/places)?
-Americas, England, Africa
What did it involve?
enslaved people, metals, tobacco, furs, lumber, shipbuilding materials, rum sugar, ivory, livestock, grain, gold
Why did it exist?
The slave trade existed because of a need for very cheap labor, and since you didn’t have to pay slaves that dramatically reduces costs.
What was the middle passage?
conditions of the voyage for an enslaved person
Explain what it was
-The middle passage was the a part of the Slave Trade. It was the middle leg of the journey, bringing slaves from Africa to the Americas.
The conditions were terrible, the enslaved lived under deck where the roofs were 4 feet tall, each had 4 square feet of space, people were dying around them, and they were shackled together
Why was American slavery the cruelest form of slavery?
American slavery was driven by the frenzy for power and money and because they only viewed slaves as material possession
What fears did slave owners/the white elite have?
What did they fear?
-The white elite feared that the poor whites would join with the blacks and revolt, and they feared the native people
What did the white elites give to poor whites and why?
The white elite tried to prevent an uprising by making masters promise that when servants term ended the would get money, corn, and land.
Why did the colonists enslave Africans?
Why didn’t they enslave Native Americans?
-They didn’t/couldn’t enslaved native americans because they were more defiant and they live in the americas they knew it forests like the back of their hands.
What were the colonists reasons/motives for turning to slavery?
The colonists wanted labor for very cheap so they turned to slavery.

Enslaved people could outnumber their owners and kill them. Many enslaved people also would escape or slow down their work.
