Instructional Approaches
Constructivism
learners are actively involved in a process of meaning and knowledge construction as opposed to passively receiving information
-
Students: effective for students who learn better in a hands-on environment. Would not work for students who perform well in standardized tests because constructivism would eliminate those kinds of testng
Advantage: caters to the students' prior knowledge, encourages teachers to spend more time on the students
In my classroom: I will absolutely ask the students questions and allow them to criticize concepts. I will not remove standardized testing from my classroom
Behaviorism
Advantages: the learner adapts to the environment, and behavior can be measured
caters to the students' prior knowledge, encourages teachers to spend more time on the students
In my classroom: I will use a reward system to increase motivation among students. I will not punish students in a humiliating way in front of their peers.
-
Information Processing
Information processing theory discusses the mechanisms through which learning occurs. Specifically, it focuses on aspects of memory encoding and retrieval
concern: not effective when students are not prepared enough on the content. they will not be able to maintain a pace if they are unclear about a concept
Advantages: Students connect with the material when they work with texts and concepts beyond a one-time exposure.
in my classroom: I will use repetition strategies within my classwork and instruction to help the students memorize important information. I will not rely solely on students ability to memorize information in order to complete important assignments
Students: students with excellent ability to memorize information will succeed. Students who have difficulty comprehending information will struggle to succeed
Humanism
students will be highly motivated to learn when the learning material is personally meaningful, when they understand the reasons for their own behavior, and when they believe that the classroom environment supports their efforts to learn, even if they struggle.
-
Advantage: It's the only approach in psychology which places the individual's subjective experience and meanings at the center.
-
Students: students who lack slight motivation will be more successful with this approach simply because the focus towards them will be encouraging. However, students who are not motivation whatsoever and have no will power will not succeed
in my classroom: I would play music to provide a safe environment. I would not rely solely on having a friendly relationship with my students to gain their approval
