ECOSYSTEM ECOLOGY
-
-
-
consumer/heterotroph
eats, buyer and can't manufactured its own food
trophic level
comprising organisms that share the same function in the food chain and the same nutritional relationship to the primary sources of energy
-
food chain
eagle eats fish, fish eats slug, slug eats lichen

CHAPTER 5
-
How many Species?
Species: a group that is distinct from other groups in terms of size, behavior, or biochemical properties and can interbreed to produce viable offspring.
-
Species evenness- the measure of whether a particular ecosystem is numerically dominated by one species or are all represented by similar numbers of individuals.
-
-
-
-
-
-
Niches
Realized niche- the range of abiotic and biotic conditions under which a species lives. This determines the species distribution, or areas of the world where it lives.
-
-
The fossil Record
Fossils- remains of organisms that have been preserved in rock. Much of what we know about evolution comes from the fossil record.
-
Sixth Mass Extinction
Estimates of extinction rates vary widely, from 2 % to 25% by 2020.
CHAPTER 3
ecosystem
A particular location on Earth distinguished by its particular mix of interacting biotic and abiotic components.
-
-
-
Transpiration
-
-
Runoff
When water moves across the land surface into streams and rivers, eventually reaching the ocean.
Carbon Cycle
Photosynthesis
Respiration
Exchange
Sedimentation and burial
Extraction (not the problem, combustion is)
combustion
-
phosphorus
major component of DNA, RNA and ATP (molecule used by cells to transfer energy).
Sulfur Cycle
Sulfur is important for the functioning of proteins and enzymes in plants, and in animals that depend upon plants for sulfur.
-
disturbance
An event caused by physical, chemical or biological agents that results in changes in population size or community composition.
watershed
All of the land in a given landscape that drains into a particular stream, river, lake or wetland.
