cell biology
cells
organisms can be prokaryotes or Eukaryotes
ALL living things are made up of cells
eukaryotic= complex cells (plant and animal)
prokaryotic= smaller simpler cells, single celled (bacteria)
plant and animal cells have similarities and differences
different parts of cells are called
subcellular structures
nucleus= contains genetic material that controls the activities of the cell
cytoplasm= where most chemical reactions happen, contains enzymes
cell membrane= holds cell together and controls what goes in and out
mitochondria= where aerobic respiration takes place
ribosomes= where proteins are made
plant only
cell wall= made of cellulose, supports cell and strengthens it
permanent vacuole= contains cell sap, a weak solution of sugars and salts
chloroplasts= where photosynthesis occurs
chlorophyll= absorbs light, green pigment
bacteria
don't have mitochondria or chloroplasts
have: cell wall, cytoplasm, cell membrane
single circular strand of DNA which floats in cytoplasm
small rings of DNA = plasmids
flagella= helps movement
microscopy
cells are studied using microscopes
