RIP
Shannon
in elementary school, I used to have reading tests where I would be pulled out of my class to read aloud to a school staff member. They would time me and count how many words I could read in that set amount of time. I really struggled with this because 1) I was and still am a shy kid, 2) English wasn’t my first language, and 3) how well I did on those tests would determine my classes and the content I would learn in that class. This gave me a lot of anxiety and made me really really hate reading.
the importance of education is rooted in African culture and ... [it] is still used to oppress today, decades after the abolishment of slavery and the end of segregation, to oppress black Americans, despite their efforts to use education as a form of self-help
even though black Americans are equal by law, they are still oppressed, specifically in education
Holt advocates that black Americans hold great significance in education, but are unable to achieve an education to its full potential due to racism
black Americans are excluded from the potential that education can produce because of systems of power that are in support of white Americans, which inherently oppressed people of color, such as black Americans.

Due to many of President Trump’s racist comments, racism is at the forefront of this particular moment in history
only white males are allowed the rights to freedom and education, while minorities suffered lack of education and the denial to freedom.
although systemic racism is built into the foundations of our culture; gaining more knowledge and learning to recognize privileges will help bring forward a better egalitarian society.
our society teaches those who are privileged to remain oblivious to those privileges, and that the education system teaches them to see their successes as a result of their hard work and determination instead of the “unearned advantages” they enjoy, like an “invisible knapsack” they carry with them.
Instead of continuing to abuse their white privileges, whites should recognize their advantages and use that advantage to speak on behalf of minorities.

the amount of power any individual or group of individuals can obtain is merely based on resources primarily pertaining to literacy and racial privilege,
The American society that prides itself with diversity and tolerance is allowing borderline hypocrisy and racism to demonstrate along its streets, while not executing limitations on the extent and severity of their purpose.
