Cultural Motives:
European imperialists felt superior and higher than non-Europeans.
Most Europeans believed that people of European
descent were biologically superior to people of
African or Asian descent.
Europeans were convinced that humanity was
divided into distinct races, and
there were significant biological differences
between the races.
The results of their beliefs were:
They saw it as their duty to educate those
people they considered lower than them.
They referred to their influence in Africa as “the white man’s
burden”.
Believed that their rule in Africa was justified because they were
teaching Africans good government, their customs and religion.
